Nothing stops. Neither the sea, nor the wind, nor the light.
Even when suspended, time continues to move within itself.
Each fragment freezes nothing; it reveals what passes through it.
In this series, Samson Penot focuses on the continuous movement that inhabits all things. The ocean is not represented here; it acts as a principle.
The swell becomes form, relief, matter through which to think the present moment.
What the sculpture holds is not an instant; it is the passage itself.
What we call an “instant” is only a point within movement, a cut through what never ceases to advance, an attempt to suspend time in order to grasp its form. But once defined, the instant disappears, caught up again by what it sought to interrupt. It becomes what it could never be: a stop within movement, an image of time rather than its passage.
The present here is neither a place of rest nor a promise of balance.
It is traversed, inhabited by memory, by projections, by everything that precedes and prolongs it.
It does not exist outside of time; it is time, in its living form.
Each sculpture is born from this understanding.
Carved directly into the material, the wood conveys the dynamics of the swell: not its image, but its living energy. The surface still seems animated, as if something continued within it. The work does not capture movement; it is a segment of it, a breath of time.
These fragments are created in a deliberately immaculate palette, white, ivory, cream, allowing light and shadow to inscribe their own passage.
The base, shaped from the very form of the sculpture, does not aim to stabilize it but to mark the stopping point of the gesture: the place where the present tried to be isolated, before slipping away.
It is here that the attempt fails, where the present moment disappears, caught by time, and becomes its own movement.
INS // TEMPS is not a closed series.
Each piece is a fragment of reality, a cut within continuity, a vain attempt to isolate or freeze the present moment. Together they form a kind of living archive of movement, states of sea, states of time, ways of inhabiting what cannot stop. Each time the gesture tries to isolate the instant, it disappears, caught by time, by movement, by life itself.
This series bears witness to that: it expresses the living in what is unbroken, the continuity of things, what has never stopped and never will.
It reminds us that nothing can be contained, that everything remains in transformation.

INS // TEMPS : Isoler un instant, c’est déjà retrouver un océan.
Même lorsqu’il semble suspendu, le temps continue de se déplacer en lui-même. Chaque fragment contient le mouvement qu’il prétend mettre en suspens.
Dans cette série, Samson Penot prélève le mouvement de l’océan pour en révéler la continuité. Ce qui paraît alors interrompu, en suspens, ne l’est pas : chaque fragment redevient un océan, un monde en soi, fait de ce qui le précède autant que de ce vers quoi il tend.
Ces sculptures ne cherchent pas à figer le temps, mais à montrer qu’il persiste en toute chose.
Chaque fragment, chaque instant, sitôt défini, se remet en mouvement.
Sculpté directement dans la matière, l'oeuvre restitue non pas la houle mais son énergie, non pas l’océan mais son intensité. Dans chaque pièce, la surface semble encore animée par une poussée invisible, laissant deviner un avant et un après, et plaçant le spectateur dans ce « pendant », l’instant présent.
Chaque œuvre est réalisée dans une palette volontairement immaculée : blanc, ivoire, crème presque dépouillé. Cette absence de couleur restitue l’essence de la forme, et concentre l’attention sur le mouvement sculpté, laissant à la lumière et aux ombres le soin d’habiter chaque courbe.
Dans ce travail, Samson Penot propose une lecture de l’instant présent, traversant et traversé par le temps. Plutôt qu’un endroit fixe, il en fait dans cette série un lieu mouvant, fait de ce qui le précède autant que de ce qui le prolonge, l’antichambre du moment suivant.
Chaque pièce témoigne d’un état de mer saisi dans son intensité propre.
L’ensemble compose une documentation sensible du mouvement et de ses variations, rappelant que le présent, comme l’océan, ne peut contenir son élan.
